How does Witrail work?

Witrail listens for fingerprints send by all WiFi devices.

A WiFi device fingerprint is called a MAC address. MAC are unique and exists only once per device. Witrail captures bits of data called probe request. Based on detected data Witrail captures the MAC address, the manufacturer, the list of frequently connected hotspots (SSIDs) and the proximity of the WiFi device.

Do I need to install any apps on devices I would like to track?

No.

Witrail detects WiFi signals, which are part of the WiFi protocol and are so always present. There is absolutely no need to install any apps.

Can I purchase only the Witrail sensor without monthly subscriptions to Witrail Data Services?

Yes.

Allthough functionality will be limited, because all the data analytics is happening in the cloud. Without Witral Data Services the sensor just counts the number of unique devices detected. Please contact us if you have specific needs.

What type of mobile devices can be detected?

All mobile devices (Smartphones, Tablets, Notebooks, ...) that use WiFi. WiFi must be turned on on tracked device in order to be detected by Witrail sensors.

Is it legal?

Yes, but you have to use it legally. People you are tracking need to be aware about the fact that they are tracked and give you permission to do so. Please check the appropriate laws in your country. We can not be held responsible for your illegal activities.

Is it possible to detect the presence of a Witrail Sensor?

No.

Witrail operates passively, the sensor only listens for WiFi packets.

Can I use the Witrail sensors for my projects?

Yes!

We are planning to release the Witrail sensor software as Open Source soon. APIs will be available.
